how we serve young farmers
"The Greenhorns" documentary film was the takeoff point for many companion projects over the last three years:
- Messaging: Thousands of stickers and posters with original art and positive messages, like "Savor Soil" and "There Is Strength in Farmers," were printed and propagated nationwide, inviting young and aspiring farmers to use the web sites and nominate their heroes.
- Database: Through online nominations and event meet-ups, over 3,000 young farmers have joined our network – sharing stories, celebrating, making plans
- Advocacy: Greenhorns are cofounders of The National Young Farmer Coalition, December 2009
- Map: Serve Your Country Food was launched in 2008 to map and survey hundreds of young farmers, and to help them share information and gather locally and regionally
- Blog: Our blog now attracts 1000 visitors daily, to peruse the news, an index of learning resources and to find jobs and training opportunities in sustainable agriculture
- Guide: The Greenhorns Guide for Beginning Farmers was written and is available free online. Fully illustrated and now printed to fit into pockets; an edition from Storey Publishing will jostle in backpacks later in 2010.
- Events: Greenhorns have hosted and/or organized over fifty unique events for young farmers all over the country, attracting thousands to community mixers, seed swaps, skill-building workshops, and conference presentations
- Radio: Greenhorn Radio, featuring interviews with diverse young farmers, streams weekly on Heritage Radio Network to an average audience of ?? listeners
- Education: Six original posters promoting careers in sustainable farming to kids were created in collaboration with Cornell University and deployed to K-12 schools in the Northeast.
- Journal: Two editions of the Greenhorn Circular have been, well, circulated. This quarterly journal is a trove of stories, essays, poetry and reportage from young farmers. Look out for the next issue September 2010!
